After Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, Agatha Christie’s detective Hercule Poirot, in the shape of Kenneth Branagh, continues to travel across the world solving crimes. A Haunting in Venice is based on Christie’s Hallowe'en Party, and is suitably spooky to work on at this time of year. Poirot, officially retired, is persuaded to attend a seance by a medium played by Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once), and he once again has a murder to elucidate.

200 Years of Rugby and a World Cup

The tenth men’s Rugby World Cup will take place from 8 September to 28 October. For the second time, France is hosting the tournament. And this year, the game is celebrating its 200th anniversary.

The FIFA Women's World Cup has inspired several interesting ads on the topic of women in sport and their relative fame and treatment to men. These three lend themselves especially well to being used in class. You'll probably want to avoid the slogan of the first one, "what the football?". Luckily it's transparent enough for students to take at face value. It features an American daughter and dad watching Brandi Chastain taking the match-winning penalty in the 1999 World Cup, hosted by the U.S.A. The dad jumps up to celebrate and knocks himself into a coma. He wakes up Rip Van Winkle style in 2023 and can't believe how much has changed in women's football. Actually this would make a nice addition to our resource on the Rip Van Winkle story! In any case there's plenty to discuss in the basic story and the visuals. The ad features 11 players: Ada Hegerberg (Norway), Alex Morgan (U.S.A.), Asisat Oshoala (Nigeria), Chloe Kelly (England), Debinha (Brazill), Grace Geyoro (France), Kadeisha Buchanan (Canada), Megan Rapinoe (U.S.A.), Sam Kerr (Australia), Sophia Smith (U.S.A.), and Wang Shuang (China). More advanced pupils should be able to pick out the ways the players are described and use similar expressions to describe their own sporting or other heroes. https://youtu.be/y5Jg9Wxc6yo This second ad celebrates players Alessia Russo (England), Lena Oberdorf (Germany) and Mary Fowler (Australia) and also features former England players David Beckham and Ian Wright, Leon Goretzka from Germany and Argentinian Lionel Messi alongside Wednesday actor and football fan Jenna Ortega. It's short and relatively simple, with the three women shooting and dribbling balls in a forest and a supermarket. It ends with a deadpan, "Clean up in aisle 23." Pupils can describe what's going on and be asked to compare their familiarity with the current female stars versus the male stars featured. https://youtu.be/iLNZdPDb5ps  And finally, we couldn't resist this one, even though it's French, so we wouldn't usually suggest it for English class. But in this "English version", the French is only the audio football commentary, so why not use it without sound. It's perfect for  éducation au médias: stop at 0'53 when you see "Only the Bleus can give us these emotions", then play on so pupils can discover that the whole first section was a fake: footage of the French women's team was altered to make it look like the men's players. (It's frighteningly well done.) Ask pupils if they feel differently about the footage once they know it was the women's team: would they have been as interested if you had shown the women playing first? You can also have a discussion about the video faking technology and some pupils might like to try doing a suitable excited commentary following the English subtitles in the first half. https://youtu.be/QVNZRHIZVL8

Young Inventors Sail Model Boats Around Antarctica

Scottish brothers Ollie and Harry Ferguson are just 13 and 11, but they’ve dedicated their lives to having adventures. The latest one is building two model boats that have been launched to sail around Antarctica and collect scientific data about the ocean and the air. Ollie and Harry already have a Guinness World Record for the longest distance travelled at sea by a toy boat: 15,000 km travelled by one they built out of Playmobil. But the Antarctic adventure has a historic inspiration: the Ross scientific expedition of 1839-43. British Captain James Clark Ross and his men, on two ships, the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, discovered the Ross Ice Shelf, the largest Antarctic ice shelf. The same ships then participated in the tragic 1845 Franklin expedition trying to find the North-West passage north of Canada. The ships got trapped in pack ice and the men perished. When the wrecks of the ships were discovered in 2014 and 2016, it inspired the brothers to make model versions of the ships. It’s taken two years to build and test the one-metre-long ships and get official permission to launch them. They were launched on 11 July from South Georgia, a British territory in the South Atlantic. You can follow their progress here. The boys’ objective is for the ships to circumnavigate Antarctica, a journey of 20,000 km, which they estimate will take two years. As they travel, sensors on the ships will collect scientific data including air temperature, ocean temperature and ocean pH which can be markers of climate change. “We’re interested to collect data about climate change and also just trying to see what happens to the boats and the end result and – though there is a very low chance – to see if we will ever see them again.” Harry 500 Adventures The brothers, who live near Aberdeen, have been working their way through a list of 500 adventures for several years and have currently ticked 425 off their list, including sending Lego men to space, living in a cave, driving over 30 forms of transport and starting their own country.  As well of course setting  a Guinness World Record for the "most travelled toy boat". Their Playmobil boat named Adventure, travelled 6,072.47 km from Scotland to Barbados.

Women on the Pitch

The ninth FIFA Women's World Cup will be held in Australia and New Zealand from 20 July to 20 August. The tournament is being billed as the biggest ever women's sporting event . More than a million match tickets have been sold and the tournament will involve the biggest number of teams, and therefore matches, in its 32-year history: 32 teams will compete, up from 24 in the 2019 World Cup in France.

Ma langue et moi - Atelier d'écriture

Par Marie-Françoise Roger Proposer un atelier sur son propre rapport à la langue, langue maternelle, langue de l’autre, peut aider les élèves (4 e -3 e ) à se situer eux-mêmes. Deux écrivains, Leïla Sebbar et Aharon Appelfeld, apportent des pistes éclairantes pour mener à bien cette quête langagière. Le bruissement de la langue Aharon Appelfeld est né en 1932 près de Czernowitz – il a vécu dans la même rue que le poète Paul Celan. L’allemand est sa langue maternelle. Dans Histoire d’une vie , il narre comment il lui semble que son premier souvenir est né au mot Erdbeeren : « fraises ». Mais son enfance est baignée de plusieurs langues. Ses parents, des juifs athées et aisés, parlent l’allemand entre eux et avec lui, ses grands-parents, des juifs religieux, parlaient le yiddish, et les domestiques parlent ukrainien. Pendant la guerre, à dix ans à peine, il s’enfuit du camp où lui et son père ont été déportés (sa mère a été abattue pendant les pogroms de 1941) ; il survit soit seul, soit avec divers déclassés ukrainiens. À la fin de la guerre, il émigre en Palestine depuis l’Italie. Il évoque, dans le chapitre 18 d’Histoire d’une vie, son mutisme, son bégaiement, son sentiment d’être perdu : « Sans langue je suis semblable à une pierre ». À l’adolescence, en plus de l’hébreu qu’il ne sait pas, il a réapprend à lire et à écrire. « Pour moi, écrire, c’est chercher un foyer. Je suis arrivé dans ce pays – Israël – quand j’étais adolescent, je n’avais pas de parents, pas de langage. L’écriture est ainsi devenue une sorte de quête de moi-même. » Appelfeld se défie des « mots soigneusement choisis et des slogans ». Il écrit : « Je haïssais depuis mon enfance les mots précieux et prétentieux, auxquels je préférais les mots petits et tranquilles qui évoquaient des odeurs et des sons ». La langue des origines Leïla Sebbar, romancière et nouvelliste, est née le 19 novembre 1941 à Aflou (Hauts-plateaux dans le département d’Oran), en Algérie coloniale, d’un père algérien et d’une mère française, tous deux instituteurs. Elle vit en France à partir de l’âge de dix-huit ans. Leïla Sebbar a expliqué, notamment dans Je ne parle pas la langue de mon pèr e (2003) et L’arabe comme un chant secret (2007), que le fait de ne pas apprendre la langue arabe pendant l’enfance et l’exil dès son jeune âge adulte en raison de la guerre d’Indépendance ont créé chez elle un gouffre identitaire difficilement cicatrisable. « Je me suis perdue à moi […] Qui pouvait me reconnaître ? Mon père. Ma mère. Où je risquais d’être reconnue ? » dit-elle en s’interrogeant sur son identité. Ses interrogations renvoient systématiquement à son enfance : « Je sais que mon père était arabe, moi aussi ? » Dans L’arabe comme un chant secret , elle évoque ses rencontres, enfant, avec la famille de son père : « Tout me sépare de la mère et des sœurs de mon père. La langue, les gestes, les manières, les habitudes domestiques. » Elle se souvient des « rires de cette après-midi d’été dans une cour fermée, protégée par l’odeur du figuier mêlée au miel des gâteaux que nous allons emporter pour le voyage dans la Peugeot 202 noire. » Là encore, la langue de l’enfance est celle des couleurs, des odeurs, des saveurs… Pour ces deux écrivains, la langue maternelle est celle des sensations que transmet la mémoire. Ils ne se reconnaissent pas dans la langue apprise. Proposition pour un atelier Chaque élève s’interrogera sur son rapport à la langue. D’où lui vient-elle ? A-t-il ou elle déjà entendu d’autres langues ? Chacun a peut-être fait l’expérience d’instants où l’on peut se sentir dépossédé de sa langue. Perdu parce que l’on est en pays étranger, ou au milieu d’autres qui parlent une langue différente soit parce qu’elle est étrangère soit parce que ce n’est pas la langue à laquelle on est habitué. C’est une langue recherchée, trop savante, mêlée d’expressions locales, de mots rares que l’on ignore, inhabituelle par ses intonations, ses accents, ses particularités. Chacun se souvient de l’apprentissage de sa langue ou d’une langue étrangère, ses difficultés, ses plaisirs, essaie de mettre en mots les difficultés qu’il a pu ressentir, le sentiment d’être seul, incapable d’échanger avec l’autre qui ne parle pas la même langue, ou au contraire le plaisir que l’on a pu éprouver à découvrir la parole et l’écriture, ainsi que les échanges que permet l’apprentissage d’une langue. On fera le récit d’une de ces expériences.
