Caroline Criado Perez's thought-provoking book Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men does exactly what it says: shows the hundreds of ways in which the needs of women (and anyone who isn't a 1.77m tall, 76kg white male) are ignored in all aspects of our society. The author will be giving a reading in Paris on 16 July.

The Mouse Mansion

"The Mouse Mansion" is a sequence for 6e pupils based on the children's book of the same name by Karina Schaapman, and on the DIY video tutorials on her website. Pupils make their own rooms for the mansion. It's an excellent opportunity to practise vocabulary about rooms and furniture. Author and artist Schaapman spent years building and furnishing the Mouse Mansion, an elaborate doll’s house, out of cardboard boxes and papier-mâché, and writes books about the mice, Sam and Julia, who inhabit it.

2019 marks the bicentenary of the births of Britain’s Queen Victoria and her beloved husband Prince Albert. Victoria reigned from 1837 until 1899, the longest reign of any British monarch until the current Queen overtook the record in 2015. Victoria reigned over an era of imperial expansion, ultimately ruling over a quarter of the world’s population. It was also an era of technological progress, with transport and communications innovations that made her the first monarch of the information age.

Dorothea Lange: On the Road

Dorothea Lange's iconic photos of Depression-era America and the farming families forced to flee meteorological and financial disasters often focus on the roads the migrants travelled. Rockwell, Roosevelt and Freedom

This B1-level article will introduce your pupils to the Rockwell and Roosevelt Four Freedoms Exhibition (Caen Mémorial, June-October 2019). It focuses and expands on a very specific passage from Franklin D. Roosevelt’s State of the Union speech delivered in January 1941 in which he put an emphasis on freedom, or rather freedoms: freedom from fear, from want, freedom of religion and of speech. As the U.S. entered WWII, Rockwell gave shape to these concepts in four paintings that are now world-famous and the subjects of an exhibition in Caen celebrating the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

D-Day in Sound and Poetry

As part of the commemorations of the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the town of Bayeux is hosting an immersive audio performance in English about British war poet and D-Day veteran Keith Douglas. Douglas was a WWII tank commander, who fought in North Africa and participated in the Normandy landings. He was killed three days after D-Day, on 9 June 1944, near Caen, while on a reconnaissance mission. Unicorns, Almost , is a one-man play about his life by Welsh poet and playwright Owen Sheers. It premiered at the Hay-on-Wye book festival last year to great acclaim, and will be presented at this year's Edinburgh Festival. Unicorns, Almost 5 to 9 June 2019 Salle Toulouse-Lautrec 23 rue des Teinturiers 14400 Bayeux Tickets: €5 9am-9pm daily. Audio performances start on the hour and last 60 minutes, but entry can be at any time. The audio is in English. Printed material will be available in French.
