On 25 September 1957, U.S. civil rights activists won the right for African American children to go to the same schools as white children at Little Rock, Arkansas. But 60 years on, many schools in the U.S.A. are still separated along color lines. And one of the most segregated school systems in the country is not in the South, it’s New York City.

Little Rock School Integration Videos

2017 marks the sixtieth anniversary of the a major landmark in ending school segregation in the U.S.A.: when nine courageous black students braved screaming mobs, police and troops to gain access to Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas. Both the National Parks Service Visitors' Center on the site, and the Dwight Eisenhower Memorial have excellent teaching tools on this topic.

Young People Represent Their Countries at the U.N.

From 19 to 25 September, the world’s leaders will take the lectern in New York for the 72nd General Assembly of the United Nations. Amongst the delegates seeing world diplomacy at work for the first time are young people from more than 35 countries. United Nations Youth Delegates bring young people’s issues to the Assembly, and promote interest and knowledge of international issues to young people in their own countries.

Cartooning for Freedom

From 18 to 24 September, the 6th International Festival of Press and Political Cartoons will take place at l’Estaque near Marseilles. The festival will propose exhibitions, performances and exchanges with cartoonists from all over the world around the values of democracy and freedom of expression. This is a free event where cartoonists offer free portraits and drawings to the public. During this week and for the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, Cartooning for Peace and the European Commission have got together to proposea travelling exhibition: “Decoding the Stars”. Economic crisis, refugee influx, terrorist attacks, the rise of populist movements and nationalist resurgences all call European construction into question, and undermine the pacifist European project. 50 press cartoonists confront their visions to the ideals of those who dreamt up the European, yesterday (Victor Hugo, Robert Shuman, Louise Weiss, Jean Monnet…) and today (Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Kofi Annan, etc.) Through this exhibition, cartoonists from the entire world use humour and irony to depict the issues that, for more than half a century, have formed European politics. In a few pen strokes, a few speech bubbles, they highlight citizens’ concerns. This ode to diversity and tolerance generates questions around 15 themes: Europe and economic growth, Europe and Africa, freedom of speech, death penalty, European youth, etc. CARTOONING FOR PEACE is an international cartoonists association, who fight, through humour, for the respect of cultural diversity and freedoms. Founded in 2006 at the United Nations headquarters, Cartooning for Peace, represented by its foundation in Geneva and its association in Paris, is chaired by the Le Monde and l'Express cartoonist, Plantu, and is placed under the patronage of the former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan. Ten years on, Cartooning for Peace’s network includes 162 cartoonists from 58 different countries around the globe.

In 2017, the U.S.A. has been commemorating the hundredth anniversary of John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s birth. In this B1-B2 sequence, pupils view a short, downloadable animated slideshow giving basic facts about JFK's life. They will then work in groups to expand their knowledge before preparing an oral presentation in the Bac oral format.

2017 Hurricane Season is Exceptionally Severe

After the terrible flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey, Irma is now being classed as the second strongest Atlantic hurricane in history. Both hurricanes are reached category 5, the maximum strength. This is the first time since records began more than 150 years ago that two category 5 hurricanes have hit in the same season. And it's not over yet.

Irving Penn, Master of Light

2017 marks the centenary of the birth of Irving Penn (1917-2009), one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A new exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris the first major retrospective of the American photographer’s work in France since his death.

Teaching with Irving Penn's Photography

The Irving Penn exhibition opening at Paris's Grand Palais was shown in New York's Metropolitan Museum this spring. The Met's site has interesting videos and audio guides in English made to accompany the exhibition and which are useful teaching tools. The Grand Palais site has a teaching pack you can download giving you background information (in French) about Penn and his work. You can see many of Penn's photos on his foundation site. There are special guided visits for classes in English (all levels) in collaboration with the Mona Bismarck American Center . 9 and 16 November, 21 December You can sign up here . The trailer for the exhibition gives a really good overview of the variety of Penn's work, from fashion to celebrity portraits, to ethnological photos of different nationalities or groups of workers and still life images including a series of cigarette ends. Usable from A2+ (general comprehension), and the visuals are very rich. Pupils these days are very familiar with photo editing techniques, using filters and adjusting exposures before they post them on Snapchat or other social media. They should be able to recognise Penn using similar techniques manually, and the four prints of the same portrait shown in the video is an excellent, natural opportunity to verbally compare and contrast. From B1 . The Met site also has a whole series of audio guides , which can be used as you go round the exhibition but are also ideal for the classroom. They are all around 2mn to 2'30". They are very clear but quite sophisticated, so are suitable for B1 and above depending on the track. This one about taking a portrait of Marlene Dietrich has interesting food for thought about how we present ourselves to the world.
