Little Richard was one of the pioneers — or as he put it, the architect— of rock ‘n’ roll. He was the flamboyant singer of a string of hits from “Tutti Frutti” to “Good Golly Miss Molly”. Had Richard Penniman been white, he probably would have had a career like Elvis Presley’s. But Little Richard started his career in the late 50s when recordings by black artists were labelled “race records” and marketed exclusively to African Americans. So it was Elvis who took “Tutti Frutti” to the top of the mainstream charts though its creator Richard had sold 1 million copies. It’s emblematic of his output: frenetically energetic as he shrieks ‘awopbopaloobop alopbamboom’. (Legend has it that he taught Paul McCartney to “scream in tune”.) He was born in Georgia in 1932, one of 12 siblings growing up during the Great Depression. His great hits all date from 1955 to 1958, when he gave up rock ‘n’ roll for gospel and became a preacher. But he returned to the rock scene for several comebacks, notably a 1962 tour of the UK where his support acts were Sam Cooke, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. His wild stage presence included outlandish costumes and a gravity defying quiff. He was one of the inaugural inductees in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and inspired younger performers from Patti Smith and David Bowie to Prince. https://youtu.be/hSQcj4-zqsc

Feelgood Music 2: "Waterloo Sunset"

For the second of our series of feelgood songs, we've crossed the Atlantic to the UK, 1967, and The Kinks' classic "Waterloo Sunset". Which gives plenty of scope to work on emotions, and London landmarks Waterloo Station and the Thames. 2020 is Florence Nightingale’s bicentenary. After she and a team of nurses managed to significantly reduce the death count by improving the appallingly unsanitary conditions at a British hospital during the Crimean War, she became an authority on public sanitation issues. Double Pulitzer for Colson Whitehead

African American novelist Colson Whitehead has joined an exclusive club of only four authors who have won Pulitzer Prizes for literature for two different novels. After 2017's The Underground Railroad, Whitehead has been awarded the 2020 prize for The Nickel Boys, set in the Civil Rights era and based on the true story of a notorious reform school in Florida.

Saving Proms 2020

Many teenagers in the U.S. have been terribly disappointed to miss those major life milestones that are their high-school proms and graduations this year. But they’ve been using great ingenuity to still have memories to keep for ever. High school senior year in the U.S. is a time for rites and traditions. Yearbook, Senior Prom and graduation are all time-honored traditions that even non-Americans feel part of thanks to their ubiquitous presence in films, books and TV series. Many students plan for months, or even years ahead for the prom. Having the perfect clothes and the perfect date (to whom they make a "promposal") is an obsession. Sharing a limousine to the event, having photos taken, choosing the Prom King and Queen are all essential elements. So when most 2020 proms were cancelled, many students tried to find ways to reproduce some of the prom experience. Dressing up in the outfit planned for the prom (for those organised students who had already bought them), or ones improvised with the clothes available. They joined virtual proms, which often attracted many more attendees than there were students at the schools. Carson High School in Carson City, Nevada, announced its Prom King and Queen on a Zoom meeting (below). Actor John Kraskinski has been hosting a YouTube programme from his home called Some Good News . Kraskinski starred in the U.S. version of The Office and plays the Jack Ryan in the TV adaptation of Tom Clancy's books. He decided to hold a virtual prom for students all over the country. More than 200,000 people tuned into a live stream, not just those missing their prom this year, but some who hadn't been invited to their own prom back in the day. Kraskinski got into the festive mood with a tuxedo over a prom dress, and persuaded guests Chance the Rapper, the Jonas Brothers and Billie Eilish to provide that prom essential: music. Prom or Bust Some people will never let adversity get them down. A mother in Florida didn't want her son and girlfriend to be disappointed, so she hosted a prom just for the couple, including the 1920s themed decor and food that had been planned for the original event. The two families had been in contact during the lockdown, and the couple had been meeting regularly. Check out the photos here .

Patrick Stewart Reads Shakespeare

You may know him best as Captain Picard in the series Star Trek, or Professor Xavier in the X-Men films, but Sir Patrick Stewart is a classically trained actor who was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for 16 years. Currently in lockdown in Los Angeles, Stewart decided to start reciting a Shakespeare sonnet a day and posting the videos on social media.
