Britain Celebrates: The Coronation

Prince Charles became King Charles III as soon as his mother Queen Elizabeth II died on 8 September 2022, but he will only crowned king at his coronation ceremony on 6 May, after a period of mourning. It is an event full of pageantry, with much of the ritual going back a thousand years.

Songlines: Australian Aboriginal Culture

A new exhibition gives a fascinating insight into the songlines which are a fundamental part of Indigenous Australian culture. These creation stories also function as oral maps to practical places such as waterholes and to sacred sites. The exhibition at Quai Branly was curated by Indigenous Australian Elders, who traditionally preserve and pass on the songlines stories.

6 April every year is celebrated by people of Scottish origins around this world as Tartan Day. And a new exhibition at the Victoria and Albert museum in Dundee examines this long-lived fabric that was considered so dangerous that it was illegal to wear it in the 18th century is now a visual reminder of all that is traditionally Scottish.

Roald Dahl Rewritten?

There has been a lot in the news about Roald Dahl’s publishers putting out new versions of his novels for children, changing some of the language, like “fat” and “ugly” that sensitivity readers felt were inappropriate for today’s readers. After negative reactions the publishers said they would continue to publish the original texts of books like Matilda and The BFG as well as the newly edited ones.
