From a small town in the Middle Ages, it has enlarged to a diverse city of 500,000 people. Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year

2024 saw the 60th edition of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award organised by the Natural History Museum in London. Entries come from amateur and professional photographers from around the world and three of the categories are reserved for children and teenagers. The winning Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year photo is just one of the amazing images captured by young people about the natural world.

Richard Curtis has perfected the romcom, scripting Love Actually, Notting Hill, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Yesterday and more. His latest film is an animation about Christmas in a small English town, combining three of his own children's books. "That Christmas" has Santa, traditions, humour, a variety of families, a pinch of romance and a LOT of snow. These short clips from the film can get your classroom into the festive spirit!

Bilingual Book Prize

A new literary prize has been awarded for the first time. The Entente Littéraire prize celebrates books aimed at teenagers and young adults translated from English to be published in French or translated from French and published in English. The prize is championed by the UK’s Queen Camilla and France’s First Lady Brigitte Macron, to promote cultural exchange as part of the Entente Cordiale between the two countries, which celebrates its 120th anniversary in 2024.

Julius Caesar in English in Rennes

The Théâtre national de Bretagne is staging Shakespeare's history play in January. This production by Arthur Nauzyciel, originally created in Boston, whisks the play away from ancient Rome to reset it in 1960s America. America, America Photography Exhibition in Lyon

Put Some Meaning in Your Halloweening

It's one of the best known charity fundraisers in the U.S.A. Since 1948, kids have been adding a civic element to their Halloween trick or treating by collecting donations for Unicef, the United Nations' children's fund. Trick-or-treaters used to carry a little cardboard collecting box. The iconic box disappeared during COVID in favour of online donations but this year it's making a comeback. Unicef has lots of teaching resources about the campaign.

Pop Art Forever

A new exhibition in Paris celebrates the Pop Art movement and in particular American artist Tom Wesselmann, one of its pioneers. Less well known in Europe than Andy Warhol or Roy Lichtenstein, he worked with many of the same themes of advertising, collages, comic strips and mass media. As well as 150 of his work, there are 75 by other pop artists, including contemporary ones such as Jeff Koons and Ai Weiwei. Till 24 February 2025

Save the Date: British Short Films Festival in Normandy

The "This is England" festival of British short films based in Rouen and the surrounding region is back. he 2024 edition will take place from 16 to 24 November. A team of teachers has put together a special programme of screenings and teaching materials for primary, collège and lycée classes.

The Wild Robot

In this new animated film by Dreamworks, an intelligent robot called Roz is stranded on an uninhabited island after a shipwreck. To survive the harsh environment, Roz bonds with the island's animals and cares for an orphaned baby goose. Friendship with animals is always an appealing topic with young pupils, which is one of the reasons this trailer will be studied at an A1+ level. As there is no dialogue, there are no understanding difficulties, so that the dominant activity will be oral production.

1500 Euro Prize for a Class Project About Australia

Primary, collège and lycée classes can participate in the Sadlier Stokes Prize about Australia's participation in World War I. The competition is open to all disciplines, and is ideal for an EPI or cross-disciplinary project with history-geography, French or EMC for example.
