False News Travels Faster and Further

A scientific study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology shows that false news spreads on Twitter much further and faster that true news items. Just like spoken gossip and rumours, people just can't wait to share or retweet something unusual or shocking. The study found that false news stories are 70 percent more likely to be retweeted than true stories.

Media Literacy Week

Every year the "Semaine de la presse à l'école" encourages teachers to work on media literacy with their pupils, by examining the press and having pupils turn their hands to reporting themselves. It's a wonderfully realistic activity for language learners. There is a really excellent teaching pack with so many ideas in that you can carry on a media literacy theme not just for a week but a month or a whole year!

This A1+ document is about teenage Australian adventurer Jade Hameister, whose dream came true in January 2018 when she completed the third challenge in the polar hat-trick, becoming the youngest person to ski to both Poles and Greenland. Sixteen-year old Jade Hameister from Melbourne, Australia, has undertaken a series of physical challenges from climbing to the base camp on Mount Everest to skiing to the North and South Poles. She is also an inspiring speaker and wants to encourage other young people, and particularly girls, to have the courage to test themselves, even if they risk failing.
