The Earthshot Prizes: Class of 2022

The British Royal Foundation is awarding five Earthshot prizes a year till 2030 for innovative ideas to help the planet. The 2022 winners were announced at a ceremony in Boston, Massachusetts, on 2 December hosted by Prince William. The winning projects are based in Australia, Britain, India, Kenya and Oman.

Wednesday Addams: School for Outcasts

The Addams Family is back in a Netflix series, Wednesday. It features eight episodes, four directed by Tim Burton. It centres around Wednesday, the daughter in the Addams family, played by Jenna Ortega, and who is starting at Nevermore, boarding school for outcasts. In this A2 work unit, students work from photos and videos before preparing a school presentation.

Il est indéniable que les élèves d’aujourd’hui sont, dans l’ensemble, moins inhibés et intimidés par le fait de s’exprimer en langue étrangère que ne l’étaient leurs homologues des années 1980 ou 1990. Et c’est à porter au crédit des professeurs, conscients de l’absolue nécessité de maîtriser une langue vivante étrangère dans le monde des échanges dans lequel nous vivons. Pourtant, les enseignants évoquent souvent leurs difficultés à établir une progression de l’acquisition des compétences orales depuis les premières années de l’apprentissage de l’anglais, en primaire, jusqu’à l’examen du baccalauréat.

Thanksgiving Parade

Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in New York City is almost 100 years old, and is an integral part of the annual holiday for millions of Americans. Celebrating Thanksgiving and launching Christmas celebrations, it includes giant balloon figures, floats, and marching bands from schools around the country. This year it will take place on 24 November.

Edward Hopper: Views of America

Edward Hopper lived and worked in New York City from 1913 till his death in 1967. Many of his paintings depict the city, but also more generally an essence of American life. Hopper’s vision of that life was of isolation and solitude. He loved films, too, and his paintings often have a cinematic quality: like a still image from a film, the viewer knows there is more to the story, before and after this one image.

Queen Victoria at the Arras Film Festival

William Morris Father of Arts and Crafts

Little Person, Big Personality

Tim Burton and Sidney Lumet Honoured at Lyon's Lumière Festival

The Lumière Festival in Lyon from 15 to 23 October has a great programme of films in various languages including English. And it will be giving the prestigious Prix Lumière to American writer- director-animator Tim Burton, as well as showing a retrospective of his films like A Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Creative Writing Competition: Edward Hopper

Many of Edward Hopper’s paintings are like mini-narratives of mid-20th-century America. Although he also painted landscapes, he is best known for portrayals of lonely urban life. There are plenty on show in Edward Hopper’s New York at the Whitney Museum in NYC. We'd like to challenge your pupils to write stories inspired by the images.

Digital Seasons with David Hockney

David Hockney is one of Britain’s best known and most popular artists (a retrospective at Tate Britain in 2017 attracted a record half million visitors). His brightly coloured pop art in many media is instantly recognisable. Since 2018, he’s been living in Normandy and was inspired by the Bayeux tapestry to produce a narrative cycle of iPad paintings on theme of the seasons. It’s on show at the Bayeux Museum.
