The This is England short-film festival in Rouen has a specific programme of short films for collège classes. This year’s selection takes us back to the First World War and forward to imagined futures in 2053 and 2087 as well as films on the UK today and contemporary issues.

The varied selection this year includes odes to two very different British landscapes, family relations, mindfulness, racism, a music video based on an historic Scottish figure and a documentary about a prosthetic leg.

What is the King's Speech?

All through Elizabeth II's long reign, the Queen's Speech was shorthand for the UK's State Opening of Parliament, which takes place annually at the beginning of each parliamentary session. The monarch reads out a speech to the assembled Houses of Lords and Commons detailing the government's programme of legislation for the upcoming year. On 7 November, King Charles III will give his first King's Speech.

Ken Loach Trying to See the Hope

At age 87, veteran British filmmaker Ken Loach says The Old Oak will be his last film and it closes the trilogy set in the north-east of England after I, Daniel Blake (Cannes Palme d’or 2016) and Sorry We Missed You (2019). It looks at the arrival of a group of Syrian refugees to be housed in a rundown north-eastern town, the reactions of different locals and the bonds that are formed between the communities.

On 3 October, Kevin McCarthy became the first ever Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives to be voted out of his role. He had already made the news when had had to face 15 separate votes before being elected Speaker in January – most of the opposition coming from his own Republican Party.

Succession: Murdoch Media Empire

For decades, Rupert Murdoch has dominated the media, first in his native Australia, then the U.K., the U.S.A. and other countries around the world. He started with one newspaper inherited from his father in Adelaide and built an empire that has included at various times Sky TV, The Sun and The Times in the U.K., Fox News, Fox Film and The Washington Post in the U.S.A. Now the 92-year-old says he's semi-retiring and handing the reins of his empire to one of his sons.

France vs Ireland: 120 years of Rugby

This A2/A2+ level article and audio can be used shortly after the beginning of the year. It can be tied in to a unit reviewing hobbies while using the context of the Rugby World Cup starting on 8 September in France and finishing on 28 October. All through the tournament, match results can be discussed as parts of warming up activities.

Roald Dahl's Henry Sugar on Film

Although he is most famous for his children's stories, Roald Dahl wrote intriguing short stories for adults too. Director Wes Anderson, who already adapted Dahl’s Fantastic Mr. Fox as an animated film, has now made four short films for Netflix based on four of the adult short stories. The first to be released, on 27 September, is The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. This A2-B1 resource has students work with the trailer and an article.

Dinard British Film Festival 2023

The annual Dinard Festival celebrates British film production. This year's edition takes place from 27 September to 1 October. There are six films in competition as well as a short film section come on an Irish film section and special events: such as a homage to Jane Birkin and a preview screening of Ken Loach's latest film The Old Oak (released on 25 October).

The Centre culturel irlandais in Paris is hosting an exhibition on the links between French and Irish rugby, which opened on 8 September, the opening day of the Rugby World Cup hosted by France. And there is an online version of the exhibition if you can't make it in person.

Teens Sue Montana Over Climate Change

The first of a series of lawsuits by young U.S. citizens against state and federal governments over climate change has come to trial. Held v. Montana was the subject of a two-week court case in June. Sixteen young Montanans accused their state of violating their constitutional rights to a “clean and healthful environment”; to seek safety, health, and happiness; and to individual dignity and equal protection of the law.
