Joker: Folie à Deux - A Dance with Madness

Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to the 2019 Oscar-winning film, was released in theaters October 2, 2024. Set outside the mainstream DC Universe, Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie à Deux continued the story of Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck, a troubled failed comedian who is loosely based on DC Comics' Clown Prince of Crime. https://youtu.be/zAGVQLHvwOY?si=ja9bfArq-eQ4Au7z A Transformed Arthur Fleck Two years after the events of the first film, we find Arthur Fleck, played by Joaquin Phoenix, committed to Arkham Psychiatric Hospital. This encounter between two tormented souls within the psychiatric facility explores themes of shared madness and toxic love. Lady Gaga offers a rawer version of Harley Quinn, departing from previous representations of the character. A Daring Musical Comedy Director Todd Phillips takes a creative risk by transforming this new opus into a musical comedy. This shift in tone contrasts with the dark and violent atmosphere of the first film. The musical sequences, sometimes baroque, serve to illustrate the mental state of the protagonists. Lady Gaga, with her musical experience, adds a vocal dimension to the film. The narrative structure of Folie à Deux also differs from its predecessor. A large part of the film takes place in the courthouse, where the Joker's trial is filmed like a reality show. This approach allows the director to question the voyeurism and sensationalism of contemporary society. Visually, the film alternates between gloomy scenes in the asylum and flamboyant musical moments, creating an eclectic style that blends reality and illusions. Unlike the first film, which was criticized for its violence, Folie à Deux has almost entirely removed on-screen violence, with the exception of an animated opening scene. A Striking Performance Joaquin Phoenix delivers another intense performance, adapted to this new version of the character. The duo he forms with Lady Gaga is a highlight of the film. Joker: Folie à Deux is shaping up to be a divisive film, both in its stylistic approach and its themes. It pushes further the deconstruction of superhero film codes while offering a reflection on contemporary society. With an estimated budget of $150 million, nearly three times that of the first film, Joker: Folie à Deux is already generating diverse reactions among viewers and critics. One thing is certain: this film will leave no one indifferent. In 2019, Joker won a total of 122 awards and was nominated 361 times in various categories. Among its most notable distinctions: Golden Lion at the 2019 Venice Film Festival. Two Oscars at the 92nd Academy Awards, Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Original Score for Hildur Guðnadóttir. The film also received other prestigious awards, such as the Golden Globe for Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix, as well as several accolades at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Dinard British and Irish Film Festival

The annual Dinard Film Festival is expanding to become the British AND Irish film festival. The 35th edition takes place from 2 to 6 October. There are six films in competition as well as a short film section and special events such as a preview of Anthony Hopkins playing Sigmund Freud debating the existence of God with Narnia author C.S. Lewis. As well as those in competition there are dozens of screenings of both fiction and documentary films. This year they are organized into five categories: Creative forces: looking at music, fashion, literature and filmmaking greats such as Powell and Pressburger, and Merchant & Ivory No woman, No cry: putting the spotlight on women’s stories. Other People's Lives: putting viewers into others’ shoes. Outsiders: speaks for itself. With a Little Help from My Friends: looking at cross-border co-productions and cross-pollination. Bring Them Down Christopher Andrews This story of family feuds in the rural west of Ireland is partly in Irish. It stars Irish acting royalty Colm Meaney (The Snapper, Tolkien) and Barry Keoghan (Saltburn, The Banshees of Inisherin. ) September Says Ariane Labed Sisters September and July have to take refuge in the grandmother's house in Ireland after a disturbing incident at school. This directorial debut from Labed is based on the novel by Daisy Johnson and was selected for Cannes this year. That They May Face The Rising Sun Pat Collins A beautiful, gentle tale of a small community in Ireland, based on the final novel by Irish novelist John McGahern. Unicorns Sally El Hosaini and James Krishna Floyd When Luke meets Aysha in an underground nightclub he doesn't initially realise she is a drag queen. When he finds out his initial reaction is rejection but Aysha has really got under his skin. The Once Were Warriors director portrays 1830s New Zealand when Māori culture was very much alive. Guy Pearce (Neighbours, L.A. Confidential) plays a preacher who tries to position himself between the colonists and the Māori. The Outrun is based on a memoir by Scottish journalist Amy Liptrot. 200 Years of Care for Animals

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded in London in 1822, and soon added an R to the SPCA when Queen Victoria made it a royal society. Today the Society helps rehome over 100 pets every day in England and Wales. It has campaigned to introduce many laws to protect animals and make their lives better, whether they are pets, wildlife or farm animals.

Kindness Champion

Orion Jean, 13, has one goal in life: to spread kindness and encourage other people to be kind too. At age nine, he won a competition to write a speech about kindness. He used the prize money to donate toys to a children’s hospital. Then went on to fundraise for 100,000 meals for the hungry and 500,000 books for children. Now he wants people to to perform a million acts of kindness.

U.S. Election: Tim Walz

On 6 August, Kamala Harris announced her running-mate for the Democratic ticket for the 5 November presidential election. The vice-presidential candidate is Tim Walz, a former school teacher from the Mid-West who has been a Representative for Minnesota and is currently in his second term as the state’s governor. The announcement came somewhat as a surprise since Mr Walz hadn’t featured on the many media lists of potential VP picks such as Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro or Arizona Senator Mark Kelly. Neither his home state of Nebraska or his adopted one of Minnesota are battleground states, with the former being solidly Republican and the latter equally solidly Democrat. But the Harris campaign clearly believes his affable, man-in-the street style and long record in elected office are positives. Mr Average Walz is far from being from a privileged background. His father was a school administrator and army veteran, his mother a homemaker. Walz joined the National Guard as an army reservist at 17, serving for 24 years. He worked in manufacturing jobs before going to university thanks to the G.I. Bill. He was a high-school social-studies teacher and American football coach before becoming a member of Congress for a seat in Minnesota, his wife’s home state. After 12 years in Congress, he was elected Governor of Minnesota. As a Midwesterner, the campaign will hope he appeals to middle America more than Kamala Harris, the child of immigrants brought up in progressive California. But the Trump campaign immediately attacked him as a dangerous left-winger. The Trump campaign also attacked him for being too slow to call in the National Guard to oppose protests after the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis during his first term as Governor. In his time as governor, he has brought in gun-control legislation, despite having been formerly endorsed by the National Rifle Association. Minnesota was the first state to safeguard abortion rights after the Supreme Court overturned the Roe v Wade ruling. And Walz championed new paid family leave and sick pay legislation. Harris and Walz now have three months to try to win the election. They immediately started out for battleground states, before preparing for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois starting on 19 August.

British actor Idris Elba is hoping to build an eco-friendly "smart city" on an island in Sierra Leone. The Wire, Luther and Mandela star’s father was from the West African country and Elba is working with locals to transform Sherbro Island, creating income through sustainable tourism and bringing wind and solar farms to a region that doesn’t have electricity.

Lee Miller: Photographing World War II

Lee Miller was one of the rare women war correspondents in World War II, photographing and reporting on D-Day, the liberation of Europe and some of the first images of Dachau and Buchenwald concentration camps. An exhibition celebrates her reporting of the siege of Saint-Malo in August 1944, before a biopic arrives on cinema screens, starring Kate Winslet as Miller.
